School is done...bring on summer

Well my boy finished Kindergarten with flying colors...we're so proud of him.  He actually missed the last two days of school because he was sick and then he was kind enough to share the sickness with me.  :)  We plan to enjoy the summer together and try to keep cool in the heat and humidity.

I've decided to take a break from this blog for the summer- I've been so bad about blogging anyway.  I want to focus on spending time with my son, enjoying the south and working on some health issues.

HAPPY SUMMER!

updates

Well the school year is winding down here.  My son is out at the end of the month and we're expecting a hot and humid summer here in South Carolina.  I guess that's the norm and no one is sugar coating it for us.  :)  The teachers appreciated all of their gifts last week.

We also received the best news ever last week.  When we moved down here my son was labeled a non reader.  He was receiving a lot of extra help at school and we also hired a tutor to work with him.  She has been the biggest blessing, she knew exactly how to work with him.  I am so proud of him and how far he has come.  I was hoping he would be at grade level when he had is final reading test with his teacher but am so happy to say he is now reading at a first grade level.  In just 4 months... non reader to first grade- amazing!

We are settled into our house...the screen porch is done and our fence is installed.  The house is for the most part done- finally!  We're enjoying it a lot and it definitely feels like home.  I do miss some things about the PNW but every day I'm liking it a bit more here.  We've met a lot of nice people and families, became members at church and are exploring all of the cool things the south has to offer.

Have a great weekend!  It's supposed to be 86 this weekend...woot!

Teacher Appreciation {5 days of Gifts}

Teacher Appreciation week is in two weeks and I wanted to get a jump on things. I usually don't go this crazy but there are so many cute ideas out there (Pinterest) that I had to do something for each day.  School was very difficult for my son this year especially with moving across the country.  He is attending the best school in the district which means it has very high standards.  While it was a very hard transition- it's also been a blessing.  He is getting excellent help with his reading that I don't think we've could have gotten anywhere else in the area.  He has made HUGE strides and we are so proud of him.  So what better way to thank his teachers then with a few small tokens for their help?!

I found all these ideas on Pinterest and will link to each of the original sources.

DAY ONE
"Thank for Helping Me Swim through the School Year"

Attach the tag to a bag of goldfish crackers.  Very inexpensive!

DAY TWO
"Thank You for Quenching my Thirst for Knowledge"

Purchase a tumbler and fill it with lemonade or tea packets from Crystal Light.

DAY THREE
Jar of Hershey Kisses

You'll need a 3/4" punch to cut out the circles for the bottom of the kisses.  Attach the circles using a glue dot...a little tedious but super cute!

DAY FOUR
Framed Teacher Quotes

Print off and place inside of a 8x10 frame.

DAY FIVE
Washi Tape Initial

Purchase the initials at any craft store and cover with washi tape.  Seal the letter with Modge Podge.  So fun!

Pantry Makeover

I know... I know...we just moved into this house, how could it all ready need a makeover??  Well I'll tell you.  We've been in the house for about two months now.  The unpacking process was SO TEDIOUS, you get so tired you just start putting items away and the organization?  Screw that- it just goes out the window.

Here is the before...those wire shelves are a real stinker aren't they? I know it's bad.

Here's the clean out...frightening...

I made a trip to WalMart to pick up some foam board...in retrospect I probably didn't need it in addition to the liner but I used it anyway.  I also picked up a few baskets.

Now everything goes back in ... in a much more dignified manner.

I'm not one of those people that needs to label every container.  Labels are cute- but I can see everything in the basket I don't really need a label.  I've seen pinterest pantries that are decked out in see through containers and chalkboard labels but...I was going for cheap and easy.  :)

Much better eh?

lowcountry living

Well we made it to the south- I know it's been a LONG time since I blogged.  We made it down fairly easily and then we got hit with the sickness and we still have it!!  I have been to the doctors three times in the span of one month.  It started as an upper respiratory infection and now is totally sinus.  My husband is recovering from bronchitis and my son had sinusitis and currently is at home with a cough and drippy nose.  Really it's been crazy with the sickness- I think we were all just reinfecting each other.  I feel like (or at least hoping) that we are on the mend.

We are settling into our new house.  All the boxes are unpacked and everything is put away but moving a three bedroom single story into a 5 bedroom two story...uh yea...the house still feels empty!  lol!  Pretty much our old house except for the kitchen fits in our upstairs.  We ordered new furniture for our downstairs and that should be arriving next week.  I hope to post some pictures soon but as you know it takes time to finish the rooms like you want and even then they are always a work in progress.

My son started at his new school and is having a tough go of it.  He has made a lot of improvements in such a short time but they are a lot further along down here as far as reading goes.  We are working hard to catch him up but he's not terribly enthralled with school at this point.  Each day is a pep talk.  It's hard as a mom seeing your kiddos struggle, it's been really hard on me.  For goodness sakes I used to be a teacher!  It's totally different though working with a classroom of kids and working with your own.  We'll get there...slowly and maybe a little painfully...

Once we are healthy again we'll have more of an opportunity to enjoy our new state and see friends!

Have a great week and I hope to post pictures soon.
